Shannon Alicia Schmieder, a 39-year-old ex-teacher assistant in Coweta County, Georgia, was sentenced to 40 years in prison, and will have to serve at least 20, after pleading guilty on Monday to two counts of child molestation, which stemmed from sex with a 14-year-old male student.

Schmieder (pictured below in her mugshot)  worked at Jefferson Parkway Elementary School when the relationship took place. The 14-year-old was not a student at Jefferson Parkway.

Police learned of the sexual abuse after the teen's parents discovered suspicious messages on their son's computer and brought the computer to the Coweta County Sheriff's Office.

An investigation of the computer uncovered more messages that showed an explicit sexual relationship had happened between the teen and Schmieder.

The teen's mother said: 'She was a close family friend. We had gone to the same church together for 10 years. Our children were friends. Our families were friends. We did everything together. It's impossible to describe how we felt to find out this was going on."

Coweta Superior Court Judge Jack Kirby imposed the sentence on the recommendation of the DA's office. The sentence is believed to be the longest ever in U.S. history for this type of crime.

Shannon Alicia Schmieder was 38 when she was arrested for having an affair with a boy of 14. She has been sentenced to 40 years

There was a time when 14 year olds lied about their age in order to join the military and go off to fight in wars where they became men. We need to go back to that time. They also married as young as 12 or 13 as long as their parents consented. Loretta Lynn married Oliver Vanetta Lynn, Jr. (Doolittle) when she was 13 years old, he was 22.

"I married Doo when I wasn’t but a child, and he was my life from that day on. But as important as my youth and upbringing was, there’s something else that made me stick to Doo. He thought I was something special, more special than anyone else in the world, and never let me forget it. That belief would be hard to shove out the door. Doo was my security, my safety net." - Loretta Lynn

The Lynns' marriage, which occurred when Doo was 21 and Loretta was 13, has been described by historians and music scholars as "one of the great legends of the twentieth century" and "one of the most compelling tales in American popular culture."

In the aftermath of Doo's death at almost 70 Loretta wrote the song "I Miss Being Mrs.". They had been married for 50 years.

Today he might've gotten forty years in prison? What good would've come from that? Where might either of them ended up were that to have happened? We need to mind our own business.

Even using your example, we are talking about a 14 year old boy and a 39 year old woman. Was this behavior anything but predatory? Really....

Marriage and relationships are supposed to be about people being in love as partners. How much love or partnership do you think was going on here?

Teenage boys and girls are very emotionally vulnerable. They become infatuated quickly, allowing them to be seduced easily by people in positions of power. This is also why the age difference between a "victim" and the "perpetrator" is taken into account as mitigating circumstances when people are sentenced.

Where do we draw the line? Is it okay for priests to molest altar boys? Male teachers over 40 to have sex with 13 year old girls? What about 12, 11, 10, 9 year olds? Where is the line? Any borderline we draw is arbitrary, but we need a line.

Anecdotes about a handful of successful relationships do not replace the damage caused by sexually predatory behavior even when the victim was a "willing" participant at the time.

Its nice to see that women can be prosecuted and sentenced for these sex crimes as quickly as a man. IF this had been a 40 year old male teacher and a 14 year old female student my guess is that you sorts crying about the sentence being too much wouldnt be saying a damned thing.

Exactly. He would have been seen as a disgusting predator (correctly). Unfortunately both men and women give a pass to women predators. The feminists pretend like "it aint so bad!" and the men, well they just wish it were them at 14, not knowing that this sort of thing can destroy even a boy's life.

Your guess is dead wrong. Re read my post.

This is why juries should be very careful when it comes to convicting someone of an offense. Often juries are shocked to learn that when they convict someone of a relatively minor offense, often drugs, that the person gets decades in prison.

Thanks to judges with IQ's that don't even hit double digits.

the so called "justice" system in this country is a pathetic joke, not even comparable to 3rd world countries.

For profit prisons and their paid employees the utterly corrupt prosecutors, lawyers and judges. All getting bonuses for destroying Americans lives. Come bastille day they will be some of the first to meet the blade.

Those that can't or won't defend themselves can only be slaves.

Not condoning the "sex act" but wish I had teachers with legs like that when I was in High School back in the 70's instead of post menapause, men hating, broom riding, old hags!

Shannon was originally charged with 2 counts of aggravated child molestation and 1 count of statutory rape. In the state of Georgia, aggravated child molestation carries a sentence of 25 years to life in prison. SHANNON PLED GUILTY to 2 lesser counts of child molestation and accepted the sentence of 20 years in prison and 20 years on parole to avoid a possible life sentence. Due to the overwhelming evidence against her a jury was sure to find her guilty. A Coweta county man was recently given 7 life sentences for molesting 2 teenaged boys. Coweta county is sending a message that there is no tolerance for any kind of child molestation in our county. There was already evidence of inappropriate computer messages to other young boys. Child molesters always move on to another victim, and she is exactly where she needs to be to protect the children in our county.
